Animal Care Policy

The Animal Care Policy must be followed by all researchers conducting research using animals.

Training

All animal care certificate applicants are required to complete the online Animal User Training Program offered through the Nexus remote learning platform.

Additional animal users named on a certificate are required complete the Animal User Training Program before being given access to animals. Additionally, certificate holders must ensure animal users receive direct supervision until they demonstrate proficiency in animal handling and all research procedures, and indirect supervision (supervisor reachable in case of incident) thereafter.

The University Vivarium may have additional requirements for researchers using their facilities or animal under their care. Please contact the Vivarium Manager before applying for an Animal Care Certificate.

University Animal Care Committee (UACC)

The University Animal Care Committee (UACC) is comprised of the University veterinarian, Ethics Program Officer, and representatives from the University Vivarium, the Safety Office, each department that uses animals in research or teaching, the student body and the general public. This committee is tasked with review and approval of all Animal Care Certificate applications, and act as an advisory body to the Vice-President, Research and Innovation on all matters concerning the use of animals in research and teaching.
